Rewards Of Honesty

Rewards of Honesty ~ Foundation of God’s Word for our discussion topic, abstracted from Genesis. God said: “Lord, listen to me, my God is the great King in our midst. Therefore, bury your deceased wife in our cemetery, which we have chosen for you. No one will refuse to prepare a grave for you to bury your dead wife” – Genesis 23:6.

Abraham, a foreigner and immigrant in the Canaanite city of Hebron, did not have land on which to bury his wife Sarah. So he asked the Hittites to buy the land. It is very interesting to observe the reaction of the Hittites.

 

They greatly respected Abraham. They considered him a great king. They also made sure that no one would refuse their request. So Abraham decided to buy Efron's land, fields and caves. This will be the burial place for Abraham's family. Later, Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and Jacob and his wife Leah were also buried there (Genesis 49:29-33).

 

Of course, the respect shown by the people of Hebron to Ibrahim is not accidental. Instead, it is born from a life lived with integrity. Abraham lived a life of obedience to God and respect for others.

For example, when he wanted to buy a piece of land that belonged to Efron, he said right from the start that he wanted to buy it at full price (v. 9). He didn't want the landlord to be harmed in his dealings.

 

In life, people actually look at us. Our attitudes and actions can inspire respect in others and vice versa. Therefore, we must live according to God's will so that not only do other people respect us, but we also respect the God we worship.
